A proud member of the Union of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq, led by Chief Norman Bernard, honouring our language and heritage while embracing new ways to stay connected
Mi'kmaw: Wagmatcook First Nation (Mi'kmaq: Waqmɨtkuk, also spelled Waq-mit-kuk) is one of five Mi'kmaw First Nation communities of Unama'ki (Cape Breton Island). Mi'kmaw territory has not been ceded and is governed by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship.
Population: As of August 2021, our Nation had 915 registered members, including 674 living on our own reserve.
Location: Wagmatcook describes itself as the oldest permanent settlement of the Mi'kmaq Nation in Nova Scotia. We have three reserves: Margaree 25, Wagmatcook 1 and Malagawatch 4. Wagmatcook 1 is 51.2 km west of Sydney, and the town of Baddeck is about 10 minutes away.
Culture: Mi'kmaq language, culture and traditions are an integral part of our community, celebrated through drumming, dancing, storytelling and our yearly powwow. We hosted the 2025 Mi'kmaw Summer Games, and our community includes Wagmatcookewey School (K3 to Grade 12), an Elders Centre, the Culture and Heritage Centre, and the CleanWave Restaurant and Gift Shop featuring locally made Mi'kmaq arts and crafts.
